A scientific calculator looks intimidating the first time you pick one up, mostly because of the sheer number of buttons crammed onto a small keypad. Once you understand what each group of keys does, though, it becomes one of the fastest tools you can use for homework, lab work, or exam prep.
Every scientific calculator still has the four basic operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division — along with a decimal point and a percentage key. These behave exactly like a normal calculator, but the calculator follows the standard order of operations (BODMAS/PEMDAS) automatically, so you rarely need extra brackets unless you're overriding the default order.
The sin, cos, and tan keys calculate the trigonometric ratios of an angle. Before using them, always check whether your calculator is set to degrees (DEG) or radians (RAD) mode — this is the single most common mistake students make, and it silently produces wrong answers without any error message. Most calculators show a small "DEG" or "RAD" indicator on the display; get in the habit of checking it before every trig calculation.
The log key computes the base-10 logarithm, while ln computes the natural logarithm (base e). The x^y or ^ key raises a number to a power, and its inverse, the root key, extracts roots other than the square root. These functions come up constantly in chemistry (pH calculations), physics (exponential decay), and finance (compound interest).
Memory keys let you store an intermediate result without writing it down. M+ adds the current display value to memory, M- subtracts it, MR recalls the stored value, and MC clears memory. This is especially useful for multi-step problems where you need to reuse a value several times.
