- X is what % of Y = (X ÷ Y) × 100
- Percentage change = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100
- Increase by P% = Number × (1 + P/100); decrease by P% = Number × (1 − P/100)
Examples
Exam marks: you scored 412 out of 550. Percentage = 412 ÷ 550 × 100 = 74.91%.
Discount: a Rs. 2,500 item with 20% off costs 2500 × 0.8 = Rs. 2,000.
Growth: from 80 to 100 is a change of (20 ÷ 80) × 100 = 25% increase.

FAQ
How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 200 = 0.15 × 200 = 30.
How do I find the percentage of marks?
Divide obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100.
What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?
Going from 10% to 15% is a change of 5 percentage points, but a 50% relative increase.
Why does a 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease not return to the start?
Because the decrease applies to the larger new number. 100 → 120 → 96.
