Rules for fractions
- Add / subtract: a/b + c/d = (a×d + c×b) ÷ (b×d). Then simplify.
- Multiply: a/b × c/d = (a×c) ÷ (b×d).
- Divide: a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c (flip the second fraction).
- Simplify: divide the top and bottom by their HCF. Find it with the LCM and HCF calculator.
Example
1/2 + 1/3 = (1×3 + 1×2) ÷ (2×3) = 5/6, which is already in simplest form and equals 0.8333 as a decimal. And 3/4 ÷ 3/8 = 3/4 × 8/3 = 24/12 = 2.
A mixed number shows the whole part and the leftover fraction: 7/3 = 2 1/3.
FAQ
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Cross multiply: a/b + c/d = (a×d + c×b) ÷ (b×d), then simplify by dividing by the HCF.
How do I divide fractions?
Keep the first fraction, flip the second one and multiply.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the numerator and denominator by their highest common factor.
Can the denominator be zero?
No. A fraction with denominator 0 is undefined.
